SCGOP Chairman Floyd challenges Democrats to oppose atomic bailout for Harry Reid

Columbia, SC – February 16, 2010 – South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Karen Floyd today issued the following statement on the Obama Administration’s plans to break over two decades of federal promises made to South Carolina, by leaving thousands of tons of nuclear waste in our state that had been designated for permanent disposal at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

“We are proud of our Republican leadership – including the governor, our constitutional officers, our Congressional delegation, and many in the House and Senate – for standing up and pointing out that this decision from the Obama Administration is a thinly-veiled ploy to help Nevada Senator Harry Reid’s tanking poll numbers,” Floyd said. “What is most unfortunate is that President Obama is choosing to pay off Reid for support of his liberal, jobs-killing agenda by breaking over two decades of promises the federal government had made to South Carolina. But the reality is keeping one’s word should not be a partisan issue. That is why the Republican Party is challenging every Democratic gubernatorial candidate, U.S. Reps. Clyburn and Spratt, and the state Democratic Party to join us in insisting that the federal government keep its promises to South Carolina, and join us in opposing President Obama’s political payback to Senator Harry Reid.”
