SCGOP Chairman Chad Connelly praises U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham following Obama/Holder decision

April 5, 2012, Columbia, S.C.- Yesterday, the Obama Administration filed charges against Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the 9/11 conspirators in military commissions at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham spearheaded the effort against holding their civilian trials on American soil.

“On behalf of South Carolina Republicans, I want to thank Senator Lindsey Graham for his hard work in forcing Eric Holder and the Obama Administration to abandon their effort to try the mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and his co-conspirators, in civilian court,” said South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Chad Connelly.

“Yesterday’s decision was a stunning reversal and Senator Graham deserves great credit for making it happen.

“Attorney General Eric Holder and the Obama Administration were wrong in pushing for the trial of KSM and the 9/11 co-conspirators in civilian court in New York City, just blocks from where the Twin Towers once stood. They were wrong in pushing to grant them the same legal rights as American citizens. Senator Graham fought them on these terrible decisions, which outraged millions of Americans, and he ultimately prevailed.

“We applaud Senator Graham for his outstanding leadership on this critical issue.  We also take pride in the fact Senator Graham was a lead author in writing the rules governing military commissions. The rules Senator Graham wrote will now finally be used to render justice to those who plotted and planned the 9/11 attacks on America.”
